Growing up knowing little about his father, after his mother's death he discovered a footlocker she had packed away before the end of the war with letters and memorabilia of his father. About the same time, he received a letter from a family in France about a memorial to celebrate the fighter pilot who saved their village, and wondering if the author was a relative. The book relates how the author pieced together his parents' story and his father's wartime record from these and other events. Includes a pasted-in update about an additional discovery of a woman in England who had discovered the kit bag belonging to the author's father, brought to England from France by her grandfather, who was a British soldier.
