Some minor edge and surface wear to binding. Inner hinge tender and splitting in a couple of places which has left the binding somewhat shaken. School Prize Bookplate to f.e.p. Illustrated with colour plates and line drawings in text. Overall a Good copy. Scarce.

10.5x16.5 cm, pp. [1] 2-15 [16: blank], 12 plates with colored steel engravings, embossed paper slipcase with colored view of "Kingston from the Citadel" pasted to the front panel. First edition. A packet of colored views published as part of "Nelson's View-books for Tourists" (later [?] re-designated "T. Nelson and Sons' American Views," priced 25 cents per packet). This printing (an early one) does not have an advertisement on page [16] and the cover title does not include the subtitle "TORONTO TO QUEBEC. There is no title leaf (as per other printings) and the text and plates were published loose in a paper slipcase. Sabin includes the subtitle but gives no date of publication (see Sabin 52322). Over time cover illustrations were changed (and content probably changed too). Not in Cole. Paper slipcase lacks all but the front panel which is chipped at edges; some creasing and soiling to text leaves; the plates are very good. (#167523).

Condition: very good. 1st Edition 1st Issue. xii,[13]-520pp. 12 mo in original black decorated brown cloth with illustrations by Giacomelli and other eminent artists. Uncommon with tipped in typed letter from bookseller dated 1939 re scarcity, since the book never received adoption by the Ontario Education department as expected. This copy with copyright date of 1882 but with Preface dated January, 1883. very good Fifth Book Reader for Ontario schools during 19th century. Contains the first account of the discovery and exploration of the Pelly River by Robert Campbell p.435-443.

15x9.5 cm, 12 plates with color steel engravings some made from photographs, enclosed in printed card slipcase. A first or early printing. According to Dow (p. 1226) the earliest edition was published in 1859. Sabin 52320 records a 64-page booklet published in 1859 with a map, but apparently no plates. The plates offered here were enclosed in printed card slipcase with no booklet. The steel engravings (termed "oil-colour views" by Nelson) were made from photographs as well as from sketches by Washington Friend. "The views are fine and beautifully colored" (Dow). Spotting and soiling to margins of some plates, plates are lightly worn at edges, one plate has a stain on the lower edge just touching the image, the blank versos are tanned as is usually the case with these Nelson engraved views. Nevertheless the views are bright and vividly colored. Only the front panel of the card slipcase has survived. (#167709).
