Paperback. Condition: New. Using controversy over abortion as a lens through which to compare the political process and role of the media in these two very different democracies, this book examines the contest over meaning that is being waged by social movements, political parties, churches and other social actors. Abortion is a critical battleground for debates over social values in both countries, but the constitutional premises on which arguments rest differ, as do the strategies that movements and parties adopt and the opportunities for influence that are open to them. By examining how these debates are conducted and by whom in light of the normative claims made by democratic theorists, the book also offers a means of judging how well either country lives up to the ideals of democratic debate in practice.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition ( 'First published 2002 '). Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy of this book for sale on the Internet. Moreover, the book came from the library of the renowned sociologist Daniel Bell and is inscribed to him. The inscription is from the co-author William Anthony Gamson, from one sociologist to another. It reads: 'Dear Dan: You have written and thought a lot about democracy and the public sphere and I would love to get your reactions to this effort. I hope we will have a chance to talk this summer. Warm regards, Bill.' The book is in near-perfect condition. It has a light whitish discoloration on the middle page edge which looks tan when you have the book open and can see it on the side. I think it's more of a spot of rubbing than soiling, but it's so mild it's kind of impossible to tell. Doesn't really have any impact on the pages themselves, just a very slight bit of curling over 1/2 inch of the edge. Otherwise, the pages look terrific. They are perfectly clean. I'm not seeing any creasing. There are no placeholder corner creases. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The book is also perfectly bound with nicely tight pages from beginning to end and nicely tight covers. The covers are very clean. You can see them in the photos. I'm not seeing any wear that needs to be called out. 'Daniel Bell is best known for his contributions to post-industrialism. His most influential books are The End of Ideology, The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism, and The Coming of Post-Industrial Society. Two of these, the End of Ideology and the Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism were listed by the Times Literary Supplement as among the 100 most important books in the second half of the twentieth century. Besides Bell only Isaiah Berlin, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Albert Camus, George Orwell and Hannah Arendt, had two books so listed.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
