No Binding. Condition: Very Good. With the jointly realised action Vietnam Party, Brus and Muehl were clearly referring to contemporary geopolitics. Theirs was a cynical commentary on the absurdity of war, which under the slogan Òwe are cripplesÓ intended to present the Òdestruction and mutilation of peopleÓ. The action, held in MuehlÕs basement studio on ViennaÕs Perinetgasse, was for invited guests only. Even if the audience remained largely in the role of onlookers, they were supposed to appear in costume and also asked to perform smaller actions, such as throwing various materials. The mimeographed invitation states that costumes were ÒobligatoryÓ and suggests for example, Òbloody ketchup bandages (gauze bandages), head bandages, breast-arm-leg-belly bandages, corsets, girdles, neck supports, splints, prostheses, and plaster castsÓ. It also recommends each person bring Ò2 kilos of flour for stirring up the big Vietcong tub of dough as well as a variety of foodstuffs appropriate for artistically representing torture and atrocities: cottage cheese, cocoa powder, all types of jam and juice (in canteens)Ó.Whilst the invitation, signed in the print by both artists, is dated the 6th of April, the action was in fact postponed several times and did not take place until July 4, 1966. [Ref. Vienna Actionism. Art and Upheaval in 1960sÕ Vienna. Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, pp. 165 & 315 (variant shown)]. Single mimeographed sheet of text printed in blue. Central horizontal fold, one short tear to lower edge. Signed by Author(s).
Vienna: ZOCK Press and Direct Art Press, 1967. Oblong quarto (29.8 × 10.7 cm). Original printed staple-stitched wrappers with ?Direct Art Press? stamp; [20] pp. Rear wrapper with small ballpoint pen note, else very good. Only edition, a hectographed publication of the detailed concepts and descriptions of art actions, published in a very small number of copies. Sohm writes that a maximum of 100 copies were published. We know of one copy that is numbered as one of 50 copies. The four ZOCK-Presse publications appeared in the run-up to the 1968 ?Art and Revolution? action at the University of Vienna, which led to the imposition of prison sentences for Muehl, Brus, and Peter Weibel. In the spring of 1966, Brus, Muehl, and Nitsch were invited to the ?Destruction in Art Symposium in London? As a result of this meeting, the artists founded the ?Institute for Direct Art? and eventually the group Zock. (Cf. Thomas Kellein, Fröhliche Wissenschaft:m Das Archiv Sohm, Stuttgart 1987, p. 133)The collection presented here begins with an (unfeasible) concept for the Austrian Biennale contribution in 1969, in which Brus and Mühl describe a horrifying human exhibition, in which ?human objects?, starting with ?sperm and egg cells in mustard jars, embryos in champagne glasses?, premature births, people with various physical and psychiatric illnesses, people in need of care and ?dismembered and decomposed corpses in alcohol aquariums? are displayed. The ?exhibited objects? were not only to eat in public (or be artificially nourished if necessary), but also to defecate. The sounds should be transferred to St. Mark's Square. This apocalyptic scenarios designed by Brus and Muehl, which are reminiscent of the torments in paintings by Hieronymus Bosch (the collection of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna contains a triptych of Bosch's Last Judgement), are followed by further detailed instructions and protocols for various performances. These include, for example, the action ?Ornament is a crime?, which was carried out in the Adolf Loos Villa by Brus and Muehl. Other texts include ?Direktes Theater (1966)? and ?Totalaction (für vernünftige geisteskranke nicht ohne bedeutung)?Sohm, happening & fluxus, Entry for "Otto Muehl".As of May 2024, OCLC show three copies in North America.
