Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 4th Edition. The classic six-volume set of the 4th. edition, with spectacular ornithological gilt decoration to spines and front boards and including 394 hand-coloured species portrait plates. This cornerstone of an affordable illustrated natural history collection is now scarcer than in the earl…y days of Scarthin Books half a century ago and in this condition even more so. Only a few tiny 2 mm tears to spine cloth at head or tail and, perhaps, a little dulling to the spine gilt (plus one small brown rectangular stain where a small paper item once rested against the verso of the title page of volume 1) has restrained my first instinct to call the condition of this very handsome set "fine". A heavy set that will incur the usual shareable extra insurance and carriage costs.
