Couverture rigide. Condition: Comme neuf. Edition originale. Paris 2007. 1 Volume/1. "" ***************************** ref 567.

4to. Pp, 152, fifty illustrated plates, one map and one plate with Japanese text. Includes an introduction by Matthew Bonafois, French botanist. Original yellow boards, printed in black, somewhat rubbed.First French translation of Uegaki's famous work Yġsan Hiroku (1803), a comprehensive guide on sericulture in Japan. The work was secretly taken back to Europe by Philipp Franz von Siebold, translated into French by Johann Hoffmann, and made a significant contribution to the Western silk industry. At this time, Europe was struggling to find a counter to silk worm disease which had spread. The beautiful plates taken from the original work illustrate the whole process of silk production from preparing the eggs, gathering leaves, selecting cocoons to spinning and weaving the silk thread. Captions in Japanese and French. Cordier BJ 497.Provenance: Presented by Matthew Bonafois to Joseph Decaisne (1807-82), A Belgian botanist and member of the French Academy of Sciences.
