Book Signed
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Paintings by Brian Williams; photography by Ikuo Terashima (illustrator). In Japanese and English. Second Printing. Signed and inscribed by the author/artist on the title page. The inscription reads: 'For Gaines especially because of page 11.Hi! Brian.' You can see the white/beige covers in the photos. They are clean. There is a bump crease at the top and bottom corner of the front cover and at the top and bottom corners of the rear cover. These bumps have created corresponding creases at the top and bottom corners of the pages in the book. None of these creases come anywhere near the print or the paintings. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. I scrolled through them several times without finding any instances of soiling. As is the case often with glossy paper, there is light toning at the margins. There are a great many photographs of the artists paintings. They are all in color. There also a number of black and white drawings. And there are two fold-outs of beautiful paintings. All of the illustrations in the book are in excellent condition. Finally, there are no markings to be found anywhere in the book. No attachments of any kind. And the artist's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. 'For the artist Brian Williams the love of art and nature is inseparable. The experience of nature and its understanding in creative works are cornerstones of the philosophy of Williams and other like-minded Americans living in Japan. This means not only to document the beauty of nature in photo realistic oil paintings, watercolors and prints, but also to actively protect and conserve nature.' (There is an essay on the latter at the end of the book). 'Brian Williams was born in 1950 in Lima, Peru. The son of missionaries, he grew up bilingual - English and Spanish - in the Peruvian Alps. Since his early childhood, he was acquainted with the beauty and wealth of nature and its richness. But he also learned to love its ruggedness. He learned here at the same time, to see needs as gains and to keep material pursuits away from his dreams. This philosophy has had a lasting influence on his life. Oil paints and watercolors originate in nature, despite being at such impossible sites and atmospheric conditions. The nature conservationist and admirer is completely in his element here. The recognition of the necessity of the preservation of nature must come from within and from the understanding of the beauty of nature. His pictures are then also pure homage to the beauty and perfection of creation. Williams' motifs are however not only landscapes and sunsets. The romantic farmer's life with simple conditions as well as union with the cycles of the year are among his most common motifs.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
