Lucian wrote rhetorical, critical and biographical works, romances, dialogues and poems. Those who reckon Lucian among the philosophers may not immediately recognize him in this portrait as one of whom "all the world was undisguisedly a stage and all men and gods a joint-stock company of players on it." Professor Allinson values Lucian more as a satirist and writer of comedy, than as a philosopher. Lucian was a sincere crusader against shams, inherited or new: the pagan gods, the complex of contemporary philosophies, pretenders in history, hypocritical legacy-hunters, vulgar collectors of books and above all the superstitions, major and minor, of his time. This copy is almost 100 years old, has been well taken care of and is in fine condition. Its construction is unlike most of the poorly made book club editions. The buckram covered boards, high quality paper and matching top stain add up to a handsome edition possibly as desirable and rare as the first edition. The text block is solid, clean and square. Pictorial endpapers are clear of markings with small previous owner's bookplate under front flap. Spine tight, boards rigid and tips pointed. Slight push to spine ends. There is no book club deboss on the rear cover. The jacket is in very good minus condition and has some closed tearing along backstrip seams and chipping/loss at spine ends and some edges. It looks sleek in a shiny new plastic cover. Shipping box is suitable for wrapping with a non-price listed purchase order inside along with biodegradable packing.

Signed limited edition, number 110 of 200 copies signed by Henry Moore. Loosely inserted as issued is a signed lithograph of "Seated Mother and Child" (1973), which is printed on Barcham Green, numbered 35/100 and housed in its original card chemise. This deluxe edition of the catalogue raisonné of the artist's work in the print medium from 1931 to 1972 is illustrated with gorgeous reproductions which truly capture the texture and colour of the prints. Moore's earliest prints, made when he was a student, were woodcuts, but he quickly moved on to etching and lithograph. At the time this book went to press he was experimenting with aquatints in colour and soft ground etching. The preface, by Alistair Grant, is in English, French and German. Large quarto. Colour frontispiece and illustrations throughout in colour and black and white. Original brown cloth, titles to spine in white. With the pictorial dust jacket and original brown cloth splipcase. Lithograph size: 175 x 250 mm (sheet size: 235 x 304 mm). Slipcase mildly rubbed at extremities and with a couple of small faint marks. An exceptionally bright and fresh copy in fine condition.
