An early edition of this classic Christmas story. The poem first appeared in 1823, and has had various titles over the years. It has had extraordinary influence on the…conception of Christmas. In fact, it has often appeared in the same publication as Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'. There are a few interesting points to this edition. Two of the reindeer names are Dunder and Blitzen. The first is the same spelling as the 1823 edition. The second name is the German version of the name seen in a 1900 edition included in 'An American Anthology 1787-1900, edited by Edmund Stedman. There is also some controversy over the authorship. It has been disputed for many years. a recent publication discusses this aspect. Tom A. Jerman wrote 'The Fight For The Night' in 2023. The Santa pipe, seen in his mouth as he is riding away has been removed in a 2012 publication, in order to create a 'smoke-free' edition. This is a very good copy. There is moderate wear to the extremities of the covers, heavier wear on the spine. There are water stains to the inside third of the first two pages. And, additional stains to the top centre of the final four pages. This staining fades in the final two pages. And, there is staining to the third of the rear cover along the spine. And, there is a gift inscription, dated 1906, along the top of the first page of text, written in attractive calligraphic script.
