Johann von Mikulicz-Radecki (Radetzky) (1850-1905). He was among the most distinguished of Billroth's pupils and contributed much to cancer surgery. He was the first to use the electric oesophagoscope (see "Ueber Gastroskopie und Oesophagoskopie" 1881), and the first to make a plastic reconstruction of the oesophagus after the resection of its cervical portion for carcinoma. His "Die Krankheiten des Mundes" was so authoritative that it took 11 years for a second edition to be needed. J-8.

Add to basketGhA, 168. - Beil. Münch. med. Wschr. - München, J.F. Lehmann Verlag, 1905, 16 x 24,5 cm. Johann von Radecki Mikulicz (1850-1905), "geb. 16. Jahrh. I, 1888). W., 1899) u.a. IL) - "Über ausgedehnte Resektionen an langen Röhrenknochen wegen maligner Geschwülste" (Ib. L). Chir. .

Milulicz, Krakau.

The above work is one of his earliest manuscripts of Johann von Mikulicz-Radecki (1850-1905), which he published during his time in Vienna. Von Hebra had first presented a new disease "Ueber ein eigenthümliches Neugebilde an der Nase - Rhinosclerom" Wien Med Wochenschr 1870, p 1. Von Hebra separated rhinosclerom from syphilis of the nose. The discussion remained about the nature of this destructive lesion of the nose as being an infection or a tumor. Mikulicz-Radecki favoured an inflammatory nature and based his writing on two own cases. The histopathology is beautifully illustrated on two lithographed plates. Hence the specific cells are named Mikulicz cells, which are vacuolated histiocytes containing gram-negative rod-shaped bacilli. These cells can be found on plate XIII A, figure 3. Rhinoscleroma or scleroma is a chronic granulomatous disease of the nose that can sometimes infect the upper respiratory tract. The nose and nasal cavity are involved in almonst 100 per cent of the cases. It is mainly seen in the tropics in Africa and Central America. The organism is Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis, also refered to as "Frisch Bazillus" after Anton von Frisch, who described this organism in 1882. See - Dhom, Geschichte der Histopathologie, p. 575.

Reuter, p.99 "On the 29th Ocotber, 1881, in one of the most prestigious journals of that time, the 'Centralblatt für Chirurgie', an article was published on gastroscopy and oesophagoscopy which had been written by von Mikulicz. In this seminal paper, the author described the results of gastroscopic examinations in human being for the first time. Mikulicz had instructed Leiter to follow the principles of the Nitze-Leiter cystoscope, and to make a gastroscope which should include an optical system with indirect vision, a lamp at its distal end and a mechanism for insufflation of the stomach. The instrument was rigid with a 150 degree angle at it distal end. This was the first endoscope which tried to adapt its design to the anatomic structures and to the technical problem related to its introduction. The instrument was fitted with a small platinum filament lamp which required cooling by means of a water irrigator. Mikulicz also studied the performance if a sword swallower and tested several prototypes of gastroscopes on cadavers. In April 1881, Mikulicz performed his first gastroscopy on a living person." Francisco Vilardell, Digestive Endoscopy in the Second Millennium (2006), pp.45-48.
