His father, Josef Benesch (born on March 20, 1850) in Gr. Hyska; died in 1906 in Brno) was a cabinetmaker by trade. Since he also painted pleasant furniture, the boy became familiar with paint and brushes at an early age. Benesch's mother (born on November 18, 1847; died in 1935 in Brno) was named cacilie. She was nee Hersan and came from Kummrowitz, where the young Josef Ferdinand also attended elementary school. He then attended the Realschule (secondary school) in Brno for four years. Driven by the desire to become a painter, Ludwig Karl, only 15 years old and destined for a technical career, voluntarily exchanged his studies at the State Trade School for the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1890. As a guest student, he received instruction from Professors August Eisenmenger, who headed the master class in historical painting; Christian Griepenkerl, who specialized in allegorical representations using ancient mythology and portrait painting; and Rudolf Carl Huber, who primarily taught his students animal painting.
