Creasey called this book, one of more than 600 crime-thrillers he wrote under more than 20 pseudonyms, his "first American book" because, although it was first published in England in 1957, it was largely written in the U.S. in Hollywood and in Lake Placid, NY. It features a young American, Robert Curran, who has come to England to learn about his "roots" and finds murder instead. A small, narrow chip missing from the bottom edge of front cover and top edge of text is foxed, o/w boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square, not remaindered. Hilda, Take Heed was the title used when Scribners published this novel in the US in 1957. The spine has edge rubbing and heavy reading creasing with the text block split at page 142 - the book is partially separated at this point with the part at the back of the book only barely attached. The front and rear covers have quite a bit of surface and edge creasing. Browning to the page edges with some staining around the edges at the front and back of the book and creasing to the bottom corners of a large number of pages. Scribble in pen on the first page.
