Hardcover. Condition: As New. Book Condition ? Like New: one stain on the back of the cloth binding, otherwise in excellent condition and protected by a plastic dust jacket. Pages are crisp, clean and tightly bound. Copies are scarce, especially with the cloth binding and pages in such excellent condition. The book is a collection of true-crime stories recounted from the author's own professional experience as a city detective in Edinburgh and Glasgow. The stories provide a firsthand look at the methods of 19th-century police work, focusing on his clever use of deduction, disguise, and surveillance to solve various criminal cases.

12mo. 311, [1] pp. Blue boards, dark blue lettering & ruling on covers, spine (uniform interior toning as usual, outer & inner hinges starting, soiling, wear), w/ d.j. cover art of detective smoking cigarette and holding strand of pearls above crooks hiding the loot (minor chipping head & foot of spine, edgewear, dustsoiling), still a G-/G- copy. Early Jenkins edition, of this very scarce mystery anthology by the Scottish author first published in Edinburgh in 1881. M'Govan was one of a series of Victorian authors who published crime stories loosely based on contemporary cases, and contributed to the sense of titillating glamor that urban danger would be further expanded by Arthur Conan Doyle in his Holmes & Watson stories. These "retired" detective stories invariably included standard plots of petty crime, burglary, somnambulism, memerism, and other mystery concepts of the mid-Victorian period. His 1878 Brought to Bay appears as No. 9 on the Queen's Quorum Important Detective Crime Fiction Checklist.
