This book investigates the development of the Celtic penitential system within the context of the history of penance, an evolving practice in the early Christian Church that sought to atone for sins through personal acts of penance and discipline. The author's research reveals that the Celtic penitential system emerged out of the synthesis of both native Celtic customs and ecclesiastical penance practices, evolving into a unique form of penitential discipline that differed greatly from that of the early Church. An examination of the Celtic penitentials, books prescribing specific acts of penance for particular sins, uncovers a marked preoccupation with pre-Christian Celtic customs and a legalistic approach to sin and penance. This book argues that the distinctive character of the Celtic penitentials and the influence they later exerted on the development of penance on the continent cannot be understood apart from their cultural and historical context. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
