One of the most collectible of the Modern Library titles (#45), with cover art that changed with each reissue until the title was discontinued. Orig. published in 1930, this is the first ML edition from 1934 (#61) but a later printing (listing 200+ titles on rear DJ), with a New Introduction by the author, in 267 pages + list of other ML titles in rear, new cover art by E. McKnight Kauffer (ML Bibliography, UVa, 267-A). This 12mo has light red cloth-covered boards, stamped with the ML symbol in gilt inside a black title box to both front & spine. Condition is Near Fine: exceptionally clean & crisp, binding strong & straight, pages creamy white & completely unmarked. Just a tad of bumping to outer corners. Black topstain is solid, with a very light stain to fore edge side of text block. The unclipped DJ is a later issue with a different cover art than the first issue, signed "E. McKK" & colored in shades of green/gray/white on solid black background. Condition is Good+: clean & colorful, but with chips at all corners & missing strip from head of spine, light rubbing; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover free.
