Of additional interest, Dennis Lee (Alligator Pie) has an article called, "Getting to Rochdale," which describes his moment of truth when, in the middle of a graduate seminar on Yeats, the university revealed itself to him as a fraud, as in not really what it claimed to be about (a place of liberal education). As he puts it, "It was this shift of focus that had stymied me for so long-- the shift to recognising that the university was functioning quite adequately, but in a different educational universe from the one that I thought it occupied. I had kept on asking why no one had shot the puck but it was easy: we were all playing basketball." He goes on to explain how that moment eventually took him to Rochdale, an alternative university. Takes you back. I didn't ever know a lot about Rochdale, being at McGill I had a hard time seeing anything in Toronto as interesting. It was a time of an amazing receptivity to alternative thinking, but we were victims of lots of narrowminded contempt of the "other," all the same. Regardless, I think we can all be glad that Dennis Lee didn't devote his life to the publication of critical essays on Yeats and the enjoyment of tenure. ;-> This book is a bit yellowed and grubby, has no reading creases, fos on ffep and originally retailed for 2 bucks in the U.S. Possible first copyright 1968.…
