Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dj. First Edition. (price-clipped) [a lovely copy, virtually as new, with no discernible wear to the book; the jacket, apart from the price-clipping, is in perfect condition]. (B&W photographs) A superb compilation of thoughtful interviews (many conducted by the book's editor) with some of the very best of an often overlooked and undervalued breed, the Hollywood screenwriter (many of whom were accomplished novelists as well, such as W.R. Burnett, James M. Cain and Niven Busch). The interviews, each of which is accompanied by a brief but informative introduction and a list of the subject's screen credits, are with (in addition to the three already mentioned) Charles Bennett, Lenore Coffee, Philip Dunne, Julius J. Epstein, Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, Norman Krasna, John Lee Mahin, Richard Maibaum, Casey Robinson, Allan Scott, and Donald Ogden Stewart. Although not marked as such, this copy is from the collection of screenwriter Daniel Taradash, who would become one of the interview subjects of McGilligan's follow-up volume covering screenwriters from the 1940s and 1950s.
