The first issue of Bit International, the mouthpiece of the New Tendencies, a vital experimental movement who transformed Zagreb into an international meeting place for artists, engineers, and scientists from both sides of the Iron Curtain: "for a brief moment in time, Zagreb was the epicenter for exploring the aesthetic, scientific, and political potential of the computer" (ZKM). The inaugural issue of Bit International focused on "information aesthetics", an attempt to establish a mathematically rigorous aesthetic theory based on objective perception. Its impact was broad, influencing concrete and constructivist art, "op art", and kinetic art. Bit International published its contributors' texts in their original language with translations into Croatian, or English when the original was written in Croatian. Zentrum für Können und Müssen Karlsruhe (ZKM), review of Margit Rosen, ed., A Little-Known Story About a Movement, a Magazine, and the Computer's Arrival in Art, 2001, available online. Square quarto. Texts in Croatian, French, German, and English. Original coated white wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in black, front cover graph-paper patterned in pink. Wrappers a little marked, edges slightly rubbed with a few nicks to rear wrapper: a near-fine copy.
