Im Altertum war es ein großes Reich, das sich zwischen China und Indien erstreckte. In alten Legenden wird erzählt, daß dieses Reich Jahrhunderte vor unserer Zeitrechnung von einem indischen Prinzen aus Benerosa gegründet worden ist. Auf dem burmesischen Thron lösten sich viele Könige ab. Unter ihrer Herrschaft entstanden Städte, herrschte ein reger Handelsverkehr. Die Bauern bauten Reis an, züchteten Obstsorten und fällten Bäume aus edlem Holz. Schon im elften Jahrhundert entwickelte sich das burmesische Alphabet. Aber unter der Herrschaft dieser Könige wurden auch Kriege geführt. Das Reich zerfiel, und das Volk lebte in Elend und Not. Nach vielen Jahren kolonialer Herrschaft wurde Burma 1948 eine unabhängige Republik. In den Märchen des burmesischen Volk spiegelt sich diese Geschichte wider, aber auch die Landschaft mit dem Dschungel, dem großen Strom Irawadi und den Niederungen, in denen Reis, Sesam, Baumwolle und Taback gedeihn.
