Hewitt to front endleaf, brief early annotation in tiny hand to rear endleaf, light toning to interior. A very good copy. $650. * First edition. De Criminibus, a commentary on Books 47 and 48 of Justinian's Digest with an additional treatise on the municipal law of Utrecht, is celebrated as one of the first truly modern commentaries on criminal law. Departing from the tradition of relying on medieval glosses and later interpretations, Matthaeus returned to original sources, applying a rigorous critical method. This scholarly independence ensured the work's longevity; it passed through numerous editions and remained a foundational authority in European and Roman-Dutch law well into the nineteenth century. This copy bears the association of Margaret L. Hewitt [1934-2022], the distinguished South African authority on Roman-Dutch legal traditions. Dekkers, Bibliotheca Belgica Juridica 111.

He taught at Harderwijk and became professor at Utrecht university in 1634. This is the second and only Amsterdam edition. The first edition was published in Utrecht in 1644. This pioneering publication on criminal law is generally considered to be one of the first modern commentaries. He grouped his commentaries on the ''Digestes'' in a methodical order which comprised a complete system of criminal law. He already includes elements of natural law and Hugo Grotius' ''Jus belli ac pacis'' which appeared in 1625 is often cited. There were at least 15 editions before 1800. (See Dekkers pp. 111).
