Good. - Over 100 words typed on his 10-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide "Columbia University in the City of New York / Dean of Columbia College" stationery. The Dean of Columbia College Herbert Hawkes responds to the young future congressman Seymour Halpern, that neither he nor Columbia University President Butler "could give you very well directed advice as to what you should do unless we become better acquainted with what you have done and what kind of boy you are." He kindly goes on to offer his assistance in the future, "In case you carry out your ambition to enter Columbia College I hope that you will call and see me in order that I may be of any assistance to you that I can." Signed "Herbert Hawkes". Folded horizontally & vertically for mailing with a couple of tiny tears at the folds, a penciled stain to the top of a fold, and minor chips to the bottom corners. Good. The American mathematician and educator Herbert Hawkes (1872-1943) served as the Dean of Columbia College for 25 years, earning the title "the dean of American college deans". In 1919, after the end of the First World War, Hawkes and a few faculty members created a sequence of war-issues classes called "Contemporary Civilization", which would become the cornerstone of the college's Core Curriculum. He later pushed through another similar curriculum which would become the Core Curriculum's "Literature Humanities" course. The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.…
