Hardcover. Condition: new. Lebedev, Vladimir (illustrator). Hardcover. "Ice cream, Strawberry, Peppermint, Lime, Step this way and stand in line!" In 1920s Soviet Russia, writer and poet Samuil Marshak and graphic artist Vladimir Lebedev came together to bring the energy and boldness of Russian avant-garde art into children's publishing. The results of this remarkable collaboration were a series of stunning picture books, four of which are collected and reproduced in full here, newly translated, together in one volume for the first time. The Circus, Ice Cream, How the Plane Made a Plane, and Yesterday and Today are overtly modern and graphically striking. Marshak's joyful rhymes are visually built into Lebedev's illustrations, where figures, objects, and even lettering are simplified into brightly colored geometric shapes. The four stories are a wonderful celebration of modern life, and continue to energize and inspire readers decades after their creation. This is a brand new translation of the Russian children's classics books, together in one volume for the first time. With beautiful reproductions of the original illustrations this is a perfect gift for young and old to enjoy. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

He is considered "the founder of Russia's (Soviet) children's literature." (Maxim Gorki). Vladimir Vasilyevich Lebedev (1891 1967) was a Soviet painter and graphic artist considered the "King of the Children's Book" in the 1920s. Next to Poodle he worked with Marshal on the titles Circus, Ice Cream, Tale About a Foolish Mouse, Moustached and Striped, Book of Many Colours, Twelve Months and Luggage.
8vo (18.6 x 14.8 cm), 8pp., small pink stain to one p.2; in original illustrated wrappers, very bright example. A very fresh example of this masterpiece of graphic design by Vladimir Lebedev (1891-1967), who successfully worked with Marshak on many children's books. Their collaboration looms large as one of the most innovative collaborations in Soviet design.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 4th Edition. How a Plane made a Plane Samuil Marshak and Vladimir Lebedev, Young Guard 1931 Fourth edition. Octavo, slim illustrated paper wraps. 15pp.(Originally published in 1927 by Raduga publishing house, which was closed down by the Soviet authorities in 1930) All surviving editions are rare, most have gone through the hands of Soviet-era children. The 'plane' referred to is a carpenter's tool, which has grown old and assists in the making of a new plane with his friends, the saw, the mallet and the chisel. Lebedev [1891-1967] and Samuil Marshak [1887-1964] together created some of the most groundbreaking work in the field of Children's literature in the 1920s. Later, after the publishing house, Raduga was shut down by the authorities Lebedev was 'encouraged' to move his illustrative work in the direction of Soviet Realism. Marshak, a Jew continued to walk a political tightrope in the Soviet Union, but survived various purges.
