The dust jacket has wear, tears, chips, and soiling. Mark Mayo Boatner III (28 June 1921 10 June 2006) was an American soldier, historian, and author. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in the June 1943 class. During his career, he earned a master's degree in international affairs from the US Army War College and George Washington University. He served as a combat infantryman in Italy during World War II. He also saw active duty during the Korean War. In 1952 Boatner coauthored Battery Duties: A Ready Reference Manual for Battery Personnel with Robert F. Cocklin. He retired from the army with the rank of colonel. This third printing, during the years of the Civil War Centennial, represents a snapshot in time with respect to the status of Civil War scholarship, interpretation, and the acquisition of additional factual information and knowledge. It can serve as a baseline against which later revisions can be compared and differences/supplemental information identified and analyzed.
