Gilt ruled spine compartments. 74 engraved plates showing the denizens of London (including two titles). Captions in English, French, and Italian. Minor scattered foxing, but generally clean. Mino…r loss to the caption of the Sow Gelder plate. The first edition was printed in 1688. This edition had updated plates have been altered to bring the costume into the fashion of the time of re-publication. See: Tuer, A. Old London street cries, p. 7. According to the ESTC, "The plates were probably engraved by John Savage; some authorities, however, attribute part of the engraving to Laroon or to Tempest." ESTC N505908. Raines, R. Art by Marcellus Laroon, engraved by Pierce Tempest. Titles are in English, French and Italian. From left to right (in first photo): the title page, illustrated with a street vendor restin…g on the grass, her arm on a basket, 2: /Buy any Wax or Wafers', 3: 'Maids buy a Mapp', 4: 'Any Old Iron take money for', Next row down, 5: 'London Gazette here', 6: 'Fine Writeing Inke', 7: 'Old Satten Old Taffety or Velvet'. 8: 'Buy a fine Table Basket'. Condition: Very good with light general soiling and toning. The next to last print (Old Satten Old Taffety.) has a small internal hole at lower left, visible in the photo. Final print has the number 47 written in a semi-circle, and a crease at that corner. Selling in as found condition. More photos available on request.
