This chart was published by the USAF Aeronautical Chart and Information Service, Washington 25, D.C., and was issued as chart no. 795. First issued in 1947, this is the seventh edition revised to May 1954.

The map is engraved in the minimalist English style pioneered in the early part of the 19th century, a style which reduced maps' decorative elements to a…minimum. Relief is shown by hachure with towns, cities, and major topographical features identified. The map is color coded to distinguish who ruled which regions, with an explanation of the colors used to denote them.John Thomson (1777 - 1841) was a Scottish cartographer, publisher, and bookbinder active in Edinburgh during the early part of the 19th century. Thomson apprenticed under Edinburgh bookbinder Robert Alison. Thomson was one of the leading publishers in the Edinburgh school of cartography, which flourished in the early decades of the 19th century. Thomson and his contemporaries (Pinkerton and Cary) redefined European cartography by abandoning typical 18th century decorative elements such as elaborate title cartouches and fantastic beasts in favor of detail and accuracy.Condition: This superb large format map on heavy paper is in A condition. This is a scarce 1835 map of southern Asia by the important American mapmaker T. G. Bradford. The map covers the continent from Chinese Tartary south as far as the Indian Ocean an…d Sumatra and from the Red Sea eastward to Japan and the Sakhalin Island. Towns, rivers, mountains, deserts, islands and various other important topographical details are noted. The sea between Korea and Japan, whose name is a matter of political debate (either the 'Sea of Korea,' 'Sea of Japan') is here identified as 'Sea of Japan.' The cities of Hong Kong, Shanghai and Ningbo are identified in manuscript. In China, the great will is clearly identified. In the early 19th century Asia was coming under increasingly imperial European sway. In India, full British rule allowed England to attain naval and trade supremacy throughout the Eastern Hemisphere. Using India as a springboard, the English traded wool and Indian cotton for Chinese tea and textiles. By the 1830s, oversaturation of the Chinese market slackened Chinese demand for most British products. To make up for the trade deficit, British merchants introduced Indian opium to Chinese markets. Addictive and cheap, Opium became Britain's most profitable and important crop in world markets, pouring into China faster than tea poured into Britain. Opium addiction and its attendant social ills reached such catastrophic levels that the Chinese government took action and destroyed British opium in Canton. As this threatened English commercial interests, the crown responded, sparking the Opium Wars of 1839-1842. The superior British forces took complete control of Canton, occupied Shanghai, and blockaded Chinese ports, forcing the Chinese to sign the 1842 Treaty of Nanking. This unequal treaty (the first of many between European powers and China) granted Britain extensive trading rights in China. The map was published as plate no. 132 in Thomas G. Bradford's 1835 Comprehensive Atlas Geographical, Historical and Commercial . Bradford's atlas, published in 1835 was an important work on many levels. First, it was one of the first American atlases to follow an encyclopedic format, offering readers extensive geographical and statistical tables to supplement the maps themselves. Second, it was published in Boston and influenced the city's rise as a publishing center later in the 19th century (at the time most publishing in the United States was restricted to New York and Philadelphia). Third, this atlas was the first to contain a separate and specific map showing the Republic of Texas. Fourth and finally, Bradford's atlas in some instances broke the Euro-centric mold regarding atlas production. Among other things, Bradford focused his atlas on the Americas and abandoned the classical decoration common in European atlases in favor of a more informational and inherently American approach. Bradford published this atlas in several editions and with various partners. The first edition was published by William D. Ticktor and did not contain the iconic Republic of Texas map (although we have in fact seen Ticktor examples with a Texas map, suggesting, against conventional wisdom, that there may have been two Ticktor editions). The second official edition, published in the same year by the American Stationers Company, was the first to contain the Republic of Texas map, which is based on Austin's map, with two pages of descriptive text. A third edition was issued in 1836, also by American Stationers (though still dated 1835), and contained an unaltered Republic of Texas map with only a single page of descriptive text. A fourth edition appeared later, possibly 1837, and included an updated and revised map of Texas that replaces the old Mexican land grants with new inchoate counties. The maps from this atlas are an important addition to any collection focusing on early American cartography.

This is a rare 1851 map of India drawn and engraved by John Rapkin that appeared in Tallis's Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World . The map and illustrations reflect the recent Anglo-Sikh War (1845 - 1846) and s…how the divisions of the Indian subcontinent soon before the 1857 Mutiny and the inception of the Raj. Company Rule in India The map shows the arrangement of princely states and 'presidencies' (areas directly-ruled by the British East India Company) that ruled over the Indian subcontinent prior to the creation of the British Raj. The illustrations mostly show locations in northern India that are not on the map, such as the Government House (now Raj Bhavan) in Calcutta, the Fortress of Shuhur (otherwise known as Amer or Amber Fort) in Jaipur, and the tomb of Muhammad Shah in Delhi. At bottom-right is an illustration without a caption that shows British soldiers writing on a monument: Moodkee, Ferozeshah, Sobraon. These were sites of pivotal battles in the Anglo-Sikh War, with Sobraon being a decisive British victory which ended the war. Background and Aftermath Until the mid-18th century, the British East India Company (EIC) was similar to the East India Companies of other European powers in that it mostly operated in coastal ports and did not seek to control large portions of territory. That changed when the company expanded its interests in Bengal from a 'factory' (trading post) to gaining the right to collect taxes in Bengal, followed by de facto and eventually de jure rule over Bengal and Bihar. The Battle of Plassey in 1757, an oft-forgotten turning point in world history, gave the British the upper-hand over their competitors in India (particularly the French) and set a precedent of exploiting tensions between local Indian states to expand the power of the EIC. By the time this map was made, the EIC effectively controlled the entire Indian subcontinent, usually through intermediaries, local rulers who had aligned themselves with the company. For instance, in the recent Anglo-Sikh War, Gulab Singh, an important Sikh provincial governor, had remained neutral and, once the conflict had ended, paid the EIC 7.5 million rupees plus an annual indemnity and in exchange was made the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir. His descendants remained loyal to the British and retained the autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir until the end of the Raj. Although an autonomous entity, the EIC was increasingly subject to oversight by the British Parliament due to a series of scandals involving corruption and exploitation of the local population. Nevertheless, the company was so profitable and politically powerful that it was difficult to rein in. The conduct and taxes of the EIC irritated Indian landholders, while racial discrimination and a number of social and legal reforms agitated commoners, culminating in the massive rebellion of 1857 - 1858. The uprising began in the ranks of the EIC military itself, among Indian troops known as sepoys, but soon spread to a general social revolt that varied widely by region, religion, and social class. Notably, most of the princely states that had operated with limited autonomy under the EIC remained loyal to it or at least maintained neutrality, including the recently-defeated Sikhs. After the rebellion was suppressed, the EIC was nationalized, and India came under direct rule of the British Crown as the Raj. Publication History and Census This map was part of the well-known Tallis's Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World published in 1851. It was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin and the vignette illustrations were drawn by A.H. Wray and engraved by J.H. Kernot. This is a beautiful 1854 Pharoah and Company map or plan of the Pamban Pass and Rameswaram Island on the south east coast of the India. Rameswaram Island is part of the Ranganathapuram district of in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu located between peninsular India and Sri Lan…ka. The map is beautifully detailed and notes the cities of Rameswaram and Pamban. It also notes important buildings, elevation, and fields and renders the region with numerous palm trees. Depth soundings are also noted. The famous Adam's Bridge or Rama Setu, a limestone ridge, lies between Rameswaram and Mannar Island in Sri Lanka. The bridge is believed to have been above water until the 15th century, until a cyclone in 1480 broke it and the channel deepened. According to the mythological epic Ramayana, the bridge was built by Hanuman and the Vanara (ape men) army of Lord Rama from Rameswaram to reach Lanka and rescue his wife Sita from the evil king Ravana. Today the island is a pilgrimage destination for many Hindus. This map was engraved by J. and C. Walker and issued as plate no. 41 by Pharoah and Company in their 1854 Atlas of Southern India .
