This scarce book is a first‑hand, diary‑based regimental history of the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards during the opening five months of the First World War—one of the most vivid and authoritative accounts of the BEF's mobile campaign. The narrative reconstructs the first phase of the war, before trench stalemate, when the BEF was still manoeuvring. Mons and the Retreat , The Marne, The Aisne, The "Race to the Sea" , First Ypres, where the battalion suffered catastrophic losses—959 men killed, wounded, or missing by the battle's end The account is built almost entirely from contemporary diaries and letters, giving it an immediacy rare in regimental histories. Major Jeffreys—later General Lord Jeffreys—was one of only three officers who survived with the battalion from August to December 1914. Ref GG 4.
