Hardcover. Reprint. Seventeenth Edition. x, 292 p. Includes: illustrations, index. Some illustrations have color. Theauthor was Surgeon Commander, R. N. V. R. and a Medical Inspector for the Board of Trade. This work was prepared and issued by the Board of Trade. This was first issued in 1929, revised in 1933, and reprinted in 1939 before this 1940 reprinting. The preface states it is to the Seventeenth Edition. This reflects the state of knowledge, state of the art, and state of practice during the early period of the Second World War, a time when ship's captains often had to deal with combat injuries as well as the more routine medical issues that occur on board ships. The chapter on Signs of Death and Identification of a Dead Body was writted by Sir Bernard Spilsbury. Part of the function of this work was to advise the Ship's Captain and the ship's health professionals what to avoid doing as well as what treatments to apply. Fair in good dust jacket. Cover has staining, wear and soiling. Spine torn and chipped at top.
