Boumphrey** that blends maritime adventure, folklore, satire, and supernatural fiction. Although the title suggests a book about aquaculture or fishing, it is…actually a **fantastical moral tale** centered on a group of Cornish wreckers. ([Bibliomania] The story follows a band of **unscrupulous Cornish coastal men** who make their living by wrecking ships-using deceptive lights to lure vessels onto the rocks so they can plunder the cargo. Their greed draws the attention of a mysterious stranger, implied to be **Oceanus**, the ancient personification of the sea. He lures them on an extraordinary voyage in which reality and fantasy blur. During the voyage, the wreckers experience: * Violent storms and strange winds. * Encounters with pirates. * Ghostly and supernatural visions. * Ancient, weed-covered galleons. * A magical sea voyage that forces them to confront the consequences of their actions. The title **"Sea Farmers"** refers less to literal farming than to people whose lives are shaped by and who draw their livelihood from the sea. The novel uses this idea ironically: its characters initially exploit the sea through crime and deception but gradually undergo a symbolic "sea-change"-a transformation toward decency and redemption. When it appeared in 1929, *The Spectator* praised it as a "realistic fantasy" with a distinctive blend of comedy, horror, and imagination. The review highlighted Boumphrey's colorful Cornish characters and described the novel as a "shining and salted comedy of the perilous sea," noting that its mixture of folklore, supernatural adventure, and moral allegory gave it a fresh flavor. Today, *Sea Farmers* is a relatively obscure work but is remembered by collectors of early fantasy fiction.
