About the book >.>.> This little book is neither a biography of Cromwell nor a history of his time, but a study of his personal religion. It is particularly appropriate…that it should appear under the auspices of the Congregational Lectureship; for in it I have tried to show the importance of Cromwell's Independency for our understanding of him. Historians have pointed to the debt Independency owed to Cromwell-that under his pro-tection it grew strong enough to survive the downfall of the Puritan r?gime and the onset of renewed persecution. In this book I have tried to present the other side of the account and to assess how much Cromwell owed to Independency. It would.
