The dynamical equations were simplified to a point where reasonable predictions of atmospheric conditions could not be expected, however, certain physical processes and features of interest were retained.Lorenz [in this paper] was able to capture many of the qualitative features of the flow including the exchange of kinetic energy between the zonal and meridional components.
