Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 4th Edition. In German. Fourth Edition. J. T. Fraser was all about Time. In 1987 he wrote 'Time, The Familiar Stranger' which explored 'such issues as the origins of the universe relativity theory.' Given his interest in time and in relativity theory it is not surprising that he owned this book, although I didn't know he spoke or read German. His small illustrated bookplate is affixed to the front inside cover. Inside the book he also placed a separate piece of paper containing a long and windy equation that I believe reveals the secret of immortality. I'm going to include that in the sale. Relatively speaking (I won't do that again) this book is in okay condition. A fair amount of time has passed since its publication, 100 years to be exact, so we shouldn't be too exacting. You can see the covers in the photos. They have mild handling soiling and some margin toning. Off the front bottom edge you can see what you might expect to be some sort of engraved letters, but it seems rather to be a slight disturbance in the fabric. The spine ends aren't bad, a little fraying at the top one, nothing to complain about at the bottom one. The lettering on the spine strains the eye due to its blending into the background color. The cover edges look pretty good, no rubbing. The corners look pretty good too, with just the rear bottom one showing a tiny spot of rub-through. The page edges are toned but not stained. The rear cover comes out a little bit further on its top half than the front cover, but the spine is pretty straight. The binding of the book is not so bad. The front cover is bound very well. The verso side of the blank front end paper has a strip of vertical tape at its juncture with the title page which also has a vertical strip of tape on its side. I've provided a photograph. There is also a strip of vertical tape on the verso of the title page, the copyright page. The next page has a small strip off its bottom edge and there is a crack between it and the facing first numbered page of the text, still both pages are in place. The next two pages have that same small strip (1 to 2 inches) and one of these pages (9-10) is now detached. After that the binding is better. I'm not seeing any reinforcing tape and I'm not seeing any cracks or spaces at the junctures (the pages are actually fairly tight) until you reach pages 154 to 158 where the two pages are attached only off their bottom halves. The last page of the book is 159. It is solidly attached, a little too tight on the rear side which is an advertisement for other books. That page is followed by the blank rear end paper, and the rear cover is again very solidly bound, so no issues with either cover. The pages, as you would imagine or quite toned. I'm looking at seven consecutive pages that have the same thin loss off their top edges, not reaching the print. There is also a small (likely cigarette ash) hole at the inside margin of one page, also not touching the print. I saw a few instances of a tiny loss off a bottom edge far from the print. The page after the title page has a few jagged spots on its middle edge. The tip of two top corners have tiny losses. The title page has a small tear in two directions off its top edge. An A. Einstein was able to scribble his name off the top edge of the page but I was able to erase it. That was funny, relatively speaking, oops. On the half-full side of things, the pages are quite clean. I didn't see any conspicuous soiling. The inside covers and end papers look reasonably good. The rear ones have some minor bits of soiling or toning. None of the imperfections on any the pages reach any the print. Creasing is not much of an issue, frankly any crease would likely have already caused a loss. J. T. Fraser did on one occasion take his favorite red pen and underline 6 lines, not sure what they say. Dr. Fraser's bookplate is the only attachment. So, J. T. Fraser's book with the secret of immortality thrown in, not so bad for under $100.00.
