Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Lucy Cores (Illustrator) (illustrator). Reprint. Text/BRAND NEW. Gilt & red embossed grey linen boards/VG w/pin-hole & soiling to spine. DJ/None. PO name taped over on fEP. First published in 1900, this 1944 edition was printed for the Classics Club. Speculative writer, satirist and novelist Samuel Butler (1835 - 1902) was a good scholar with a tendency to promote theories because they were unorthodox --- for example that the Odyssey was written by a women. This translation was meant to "supplement a work entitled The Authoress of the Odyssey". Traditionally attributed to epic poet Homer of 8th century BC, modern scholarship places the work's origins in a pre-literate oral tradition perpetuated by bards. Authorship not withstanding, Butler's grasp of the Homeric poems remains outstanding. Fine copy.
