Paperback. Condition: New in shrinkwrap. Glossy illustrated wraps with white and black lettering. 92 pp. Mainly color illustrations. Benjamin Franklin caused a sensation when he arrived in Paris in December 1776 seeking support for America's struggle for independence: nobles vied to entertain him, and artists scrambled to portray him. Although several artists produced sculpted busts of the visiting diplomat, perhaps the best-known image of Franklin was conceived in 1778 by Jean-Antoine Houdon, who would become the leading portrait sculptor of the period. Encountering Genius investigates the making of Houdon's marble bust of Franklinâ"perhaps the finest version realizedâ"shedding new light on this enduring portrait (now in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art). -FirstSearch.

Hardcover. Color-pictorial dustjacket over grey cloth with white lettering. 447 pp. Mainly color illustrations. Published on the occasion of an exhibition held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Aug. 15, 2009-Oct. 30, 2009. In his early thirties, Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) convinced everyone that he had abandoned making art in favor of playing chess. But from 1946 to 1966, he was secretly at work in his studio on West 14th Street in New York City. There he produced his final masterpiece: Étant donnés: 1º la chute d'eau, 2º le gaz d'éclairage, composed of a battered wood door through which one views a prone, nude female, holding aloft an antique gas lamp against a landscape of trees, waterfall, and sky. Unveiled as a permanent installation at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in July 1969, the year after Duchamp's death, it startled the art world with its explicit eroticism and voyeurism, as well as its trompe l'oeil realism. Since its public debut, Étant donnés has been recognized as one of the most important and enigmatic works of the 20th century. Published to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the original installation of Étant donnés and to accompany the first major exhibition on the artwork and its studies, this richly illustrated book presents a wealth of new research and documents that draw upon previously unpublished works of art and materials. The catalogue also examines the critical and artistic reception of Étant donnés, as evidenced by the subsequent work of Les Levine, Hannah Wilke, Robert Gober, Marcel Dzama, Ray Johnson, and other artists who have engaged with Duchamp's provocative and challenging tableau-construction. Contents as follows: Genesis, construction, installation, and legacy of a secret masterwork / Michael R. Taylor. Genesis ; Construction ; Installation ; Legacy -- Technical essays. Marcel Duchamp's electroplated plasters at the Philadelphia Museum of Art / Andrew Lins ; A technical discussion of the figure in Marcel Duchamp's Étant donnés / Melissa S. Meighan -- Evolution of the landscape : the materials and methods of the Étant donnés backdrop / Beth A. Price, Ken Sutherland, Scott Homolka and Elena Torok -- Plates. Étant donnés and related works ; Étant donnés in the Fourteenth Street studio : Marcel Duchamp's Polaroid images and color photographs for the First Manual of instructions, 1965 ; Étant donnés in the Eleventh Street studio : a photographic portfolio by Denise Browne Hare, 1968 -- Documentation. Marcel Duchamp's letters to Maria Martins, 1946-1967/68 ; Memorandum of agreement between the Cassandra Foundation and the Philadelphia Museum of Art -- Works in the Exhibition -- Marcel Duchamp's Étant donnés : a select bibliography / Claire Howard. VG/VG dustjacket is in mylar. Exlibrary with small label at base of spine on mylar covering, ownership stamp at top text block, labels inside rear cover. Very clean copy overall.

From the dustjacket, " Published to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the original installation of Étant donnés and to accompany the first major exhibition on the work and its studies, this richly illustrated book presents a wealth of new research and documents that draw upon previously unpublished works of art, photographs, and other materials. The catalogue also examines the critical and artistic reception of Étant donnés, as evidenced by the subsequent work of Les Levine, Hannah Wilke, Robert Gober, Marcel Dzama, Ray Johnson, and other artists who have engaged with Duchamp's provocative and challenging tableau-construction." Étant donnés was the final work of art created by Marcel Duchamp and, per his instructions, installed after his death. The piece was a surprise to the public because it was assumed Duchamp had retired completely from art making after 25 years spent playing competitive chess. A gorgeously produced catalog benefiting from the filter of time through which the meaning, context, and influence of this challenging work of art can be better understood. Heavy and oversized items may require additional shipping.
