All pieces are from the library of Archibald Angus MacDonald, stepson of famed southern California oil man William F. Byrne, as well as oil company and drilling company owner and manager of MacDonald & Burns Oil Producers. A nicely preserved small grouping of printed souvenirs documenting the expansion of Hawaiian tourism in the 1920s, largely sponsored by the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Los Angeles Steamship Company. By 1928, Hawaii, and the city of Honolulu were seeing approximately 20,000 tourist visitors a year, and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel was also encouraging increased tourism, and use of their beaches on Waikiki, as well as tourist visitors to other islands. The Hawaii Tourist Bureau, successor to the Hawaii Promotion Bureau sponsored a beautification project in Honolulu, encouraged development along Waikiki Beach, development of gold courses, expansion of ocean liner piers, and much more to drive tourism. The Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles Steamship company were heavily involved in these efforts, often by recruiting the Who's Who of southern California, including the Bullock's, Eastman's, Jungmeyer's, MacDonald's, and others, such as Hilario Moncado, editor and publisher of Filipino Nation. The Hawaii Trade Bulletin is quite scarce and details the big island of Hawaii, with descriptions of Hilo, Hamakua, Kohala, Kona, Hawaii National Park and Puna, with business listings, map, and mentions of Kona coffee. Shipboard activities onboard the S.S. City of Honolulu included a bridge tournament, shuffleboard, tennis, and masquerade ball. The dinner menu listed nuts, caviar, sardines, Columbia River Salmon, sea food patties, and Hawaiian Salad.

Leur union, célébrée le 1?? août 1923, suscite alors un important scandale médiatique. À cette période déjà marquée par de graves difficultés professionnelles, des problèmes de santé et une jalousie obsessionnelle, Max Linder nourrit des pensées suicidaires. La naissance de leur fille Maud, dite Josette, en juin 1924, intervient dans un climat conjugal profondément déchirant. Parmi ses rares confidents, sa mère reçoit à cette période plusieurs lettres empreintes d'angoisse et de désespoir. Les deux missives ici présentées, qui s'inscrivent clairement dans ce contexte d'effondrement intime, peuvent être datées avec certitude de l'été ou de l'automne 1925. Alors que le couple réside à l'hôtel Baltimore, 88b avenue Kléber, leurs corps y sont découverts le 31 octobre 1925, les veines tailladées. Max, qui a forcé son Hélène à ingurgiter un puissant sédatif sous la menace d'un pistolet, lui taillade les veines, puis s'applique à lui-même le même geste, scellant ainsi leur tragique destin.
