Condition: Gut. 48 S. plus 4 Poster ca. DIN A2. Good copy with small signs of wear. - IN 1984, THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN ART, with a grant IN outreach program in the schools of Washington, D.C. In its first year, from the Shell Companies Foundation, began a pilot educational the program, "Art the Communicator," presented a series of sessions between a museum educator and fourth and fifth-grade students from one District of Columbia school. The sessions, which took place in the classroom, reviewed the basic elements of perception and the universality of art. The students discussed how artists, using such elements as color, line, texture, volume, space, and size, convey ideas feelings, and experiences in their art. They explored symbolism in art and began to understand that full comprehension of a work requires knowledge about the artist's culture. The program culminated with a tour of the museum and participation in a hands-on art workshop. The following year the program was expanded to include the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades of another District of Columbia school. The program's technical features were improved, and with encouragement from teachers, plans were made for further expansion of the program by training museum volunteers to conduct the classroom lessons. Significantly, the on-site program revealed the absence in the elementary schools of in-depth exposure to African art and culture, as well as to museum programs in general. In addition, it made the museum staff aware that teachers and students need publications that provide a basic understanding of African art. Thus, with a generous gift from the Shell Companies Foundation, the museum's Department of Education and Research publishes this initial volume illuminating the diversity of African art and culture. The Art of West African Kingdoms is written for teachers at the upper-elementary and secondary levels. It focuses on a selection of the major kingdoms in order to trace West African art history from the tenth century to the present. Each kingdom's primary art forms chronological table, maps, a glossary, an annotated bibliography, and are discussed in conjunction with its culture. Also included are a four educational posters for the teacher who wishes to incorporate the subject into a curriculum.
