First Edition
Presumed first edition. Paged as i-xx, 9-464 pages. Hardcover: H 21.75cm x L 14.75cm. No dust jacket present. Maroon cloth rubbed; spine and front board's gilt stamping remains bright; small cloth loss and tearing at spine head with slight scuffing at heel; some bumping/scuffing to board corners. Dark top edge; toning to fore-edge and bottom edge. Three-line ink ownership inscription for Asheville, North Carolina resident dated June 1909 on front free endpaper with some associated smudging onto front pastedown; Mobile, Alabama bookseller ticket for Wm. E. Mickle [William E. Mickle] affixed at front pastedown's top left and causes strong transfer toning to ffep's top right; occasional light soiling to interior leaves. Weight of book's high quality paper contributes to usual stress points at text block's quires but overall binding remains firm. Still a handsome very good copy. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which further enhances the book's shelf presence. The title page verso cites 1907 and 1909 copyrights but the earlier date seems to relate to material that may have appeared among de Leon's prolific newspaper writing. After Confederate Army service, Thomas de Leon served as editor of several Mobile, Alabama newspapers including The Mobile Register, The Gossip, and The Gulf Citizen as well as the manager of the Mobile Mardi Gras Carnival. de Leon authored several books including OUR CREOLE CARNIVALS; THEIR ORIGIN, HISTORY, PROGRESS AND RESULTS (1890) and his popular FOUR YEARS IN REBEL CAPITALS (1893). Bibliographical references: Howes U.S.IANA #D-240; Nevins II, page 187; In Tall Cotton #40. First Edition
First UK edition hard back binding in publisher's original sea blue | green coloured cloth pictorially decorated in black, white and gilt to the spine and the front cover, publisher's blind stamped device to the rear cover, all page edges gilt. Thick 8vo. 8'' x 6''. Contains two parts in one of [vii] 193 and 199 pages respectively, with a double-page map of the Mediterranean dividing the parts, tissue paper-guarded frontispiece, over 100 full-page single-sided monochrome plates between both the parts, 32 page publisher's catalogue dated October 1886. Mathias Sandorf was first serialised in Le Temps in 1885, and it was Verne's epic Mediterranean adventure. It employs many of the devices that had served well in his earlier novels: islands, cryptograms, surprise revelations of identity, technically advanced hardware and a solitary figure bent on revenge. He dedicated the novel to the memory of Alexandre Dumas, père, hoping to make Mathias Sandorf the Monte Cristo of Voyages Extraordinaires (The Extraordinary Voyages) series. Sporadic foxing throughout, particularly to the prelims up to page 3, and the rear end paper, recased with rubbing to the original preserved covers, now sound, square and stable. Octavo. Author's autograph edition with portrait frontispiece signed. In addition, he has written a long note: "It is not the deeds men do, as much as their manner of doing that makes impression on an era." J.C. DeLeon, Mobile, January, 1896. [1-2]3--12, (1) pp. dedication, 5-6, [i]-vii, [11]-376 pages. The author was from a prominent Jewish family (his brother became the first Surgeon-General of the Confederacy). De Leon saw the sad failures of the Confederate government from the financial mismanagement to his description of the horrendous prices that led the women of Richmond to start the "bread riots" (meat, butter, pork $35 a pound; common shoes $200-800 a pair; a barrel of flower $1400). He writes that the Richmond papers were often seen more editorials of emotion while the Northern papers were often considered more reliable. Ralph Jeffrey Newman lists this as one of the essential books for a serious Civil War Library. Bound in brown decorative cloth lettered and decorated in black and gilt, , spine lettering gilt, floral endpapers, p. 375 shows a bit of separation at the gutter, a spot of rubbing to upper board, mild bumping to corners. previous owner's name stamped on endpapers. A very good copy. [Howes D-241: Nevins, II, 218.].
