He received nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906 and for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, 1902, and 1909; the fact that he never won is a major controversy. Born to an aristocratic Russian family in 1828, Tolstoy's notable works include the novels "War and Peace" (1869) and "Anna Karenina" (1878), often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. He first achieved literary acclaim in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy, "Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth" (1852-1856), and "Sevastopol Sketches" (1855), based upon his experiences in the Crimean War. His fiction includes dozens of short stories and several novellas such as "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" (1886), "Family Happiness" (1859), "After the Ball" (1911), and "Hadji Murad" (1912). He also wrote plays and numerous philosophical essays. "What to Do" - Thoughts Evoked by the Census of Moscow" was first published in Russian in 1887.' [Wiki] ***A nice, albeit ex-library copy of the very uncommon first UK edition of Tolstoy's "What to Do?". ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Small 8vo. vi, (ii), 169, (5) pp. Later dark green pebbled cloth. Very good. A collection of five essays on miscellaneous subjects - "The Relations Between the Sexes", "Alcohol and Tobacco", "Drunkenness Amongst the Governing Classes", "Labour" and "Church and State". The translator's preface is initialled "W.M.T." - William M. Thomson, who also translated other works by the author published by Temple. The translation is apparently of dubious quality but this small volume in the "After Dinner Series" is uncommon, certainly so institutionally with only a small handful traced in libraries around the world.

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: As New. First separate American edition. Tan stapled wrappers with black lettering on front cover. 5"x7" inches. 16pp. This is a sequel to the original Kreutzer Sonata, originally published in 1889. An absolutely pristine copy. The publication of The Kreutzer Sonata set off an explosive debate in Europe, America, and Asia on matters that were then called the "sexual question" and the "woman problem." These debates stirred widespread condemnation from all sides, as well as fervent admiration. The Kreutzer Sonata was censored or forbidden in some countries as "indecent literature." In this sequel, Tolstoy repeatedly makes reference to verses from the Gospels as evidence supporting his views.
