Mark Lemon (1809 - 1870) came up as a journalist and actor, dropping acting in favor of writing of plays, of which he wrote more than 60. In 1841 Lemon and Henry Mayhew began the humorous weekly paper Punch, which for sometime lacked success and was funded by proceeds from Lemon's plays. Upon the sale of Punch, Lemon became the sole editor to the new proprietors, where it became wildly successful and influential.
