W : Two volumes in a slipcase: facsimile and supplement 25 x 33 cm Quote from Jason Farago: 'He first declared a bicycle wheel to be a work of art in 1913, but it took nearly half a century with the 1959 publication of Robert Lebel s catalogue raisonné of his early painting, his ready-mades and his cryptic notes for the New York art world to crown the discreet and debonair Duchamp as King Marcel. Long out of print, it s now been re-editioned and bundled with a supplement that maps the influence of Lebel s book over the decades, all housed in a handsome slipcase.'.

Illustrations.

Marcel Duchamp (1887-1967) French painter, sculptor, chess player, and writer whose work is associated with Cubism, Dada, and conceptual art. He is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, as one of the three artists who helped to define the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture. First edition in English translation by George Heard Hamilton. pp.(6)192; 48 photographs & 122 plates (6 colour tip-ins); Original publisher's orange cloth a little bumped at lower spine else clean very good copy, the dust-wrapper lacks small pieces from head & tail of spine, bottom of backstrip bumped, otherwise well preserved in original card slip-case. Inscribed by Duchamp on the half title page of the book: 'Cher Gabo, de 1923 nos jours et quelles journes! Affectueusement Marcel 1960'. In their Realistic Manifesto, Moscow, 1920, Naum Gabo and his brother Antoine Pevsner first coined the term 'kinetic art' of which the earliest instance was perhaps Marcel Duchamp's 1913 sculpture, Bicycle Wheel. Antoine moved to Paris soon after and was joined by Gabo after he secured Diaghilev's commission to design sets & costumes for La Chatte, which opened in Monte Carlo in 1927 with music by Sauget and Balanchine's choreography. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION TO NAUM GABO. An excellent modernist art association. Signedes.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First American Edition, 1st Printing. Large quarto, 191pp., illustrated. A good copy in the publisher's pale reddish cloth. Slightly shaken, with some notable scuffing to the board extremities, and a small stain on the front board. Contents clean. Lacking the dust jacket. A magnificent copy, SIGNED and warmly INSCRIBED by Duchamp on the half-title page in French: "Pour Wayne State University Department of Art avec toute ma sympathie Detroit Nov. 1961 Marcel Duchamp." ["For Wayne State University Department of Art with all my sympathy [or "best regards"] Detroit Nov. 1961. Marcel Duchamp"]. Books signed by Duchamp are consierably scarce, and we did not find any in commerce with such a lengthy inscription. A typed letter from the President of Wayne State University to Duchamp, dated a month before the book's inscription, on 10/6/61 (and retained at Duchamp's archive) thanks Duchamp in advance for accepting an honorary degree, anticipating his imminent visit. Though the inscription is addressed to the university, there are absolutely no library markings of any kind, nor any evidence of their effacement. The book was clearly retained by the immediate recipient, and never accessioned. A wonderful copy.
Paperback. Condition: Good. Softcover; 201 pages, plus index. Black & white illustrations. No marks or writing to book. Covers are rubbed, with some where to edges and corners. Text pages are only faintly age-toned.
