The book was published in 1973 by James Cummings in Stillwater Minnesota. Mr. Dingman, in a brief Introduction, stated the aim of this bibliography : "This bibliography is intended to serve as a guide to collectors, booksellers, libraries, and students of literary history, whose special interests include the area of limited and signed editions of American literature. The books of each author are listed in chronological sequence and include only those hardcover books which were limited numerically, or in small, deluxe editions and were signed by the author at the time of publication. . In most cases only hardcover books have been included. Broadsides, letters, paperbacks, etc. have been excluded. This guide is limited to only those authors listed in the "Oxford Guide to American Literature, 1969 edition. There are a few exceptions to this rule, especially with some of our later poets."
