3pp., 12mo. On bifolium. In good condition. Year not given, but with '1859' in a contemporary hand at top-right of first page. The recipient is not named, but the letter is from the papers of Sir George Scharf. It begins: 'I remember your saying in the course of last winter you would be glad an [sic] opportunity of coming to see me, & what little I have to shew you. | I conclude the Portrait Gallery as well as Institutions admits of some holidays at this season'. Consequently he suggests a time when the recipient might 'spend a few days' at Bowood, if his 'engagements admit'.…

No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Circa 1860s. Original carte de viste photo portrait (seated, facing right). Card dimensions 2 1/2 x 4 inches, photo 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches. Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne, (1780-1863) was a very influential Whig statesman during the reigns of George III, George IV, William IV and Victoria. Among other appointments, he served as the Home Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Lord President of the Council. His father, William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, was Prime Minister from 1782-1783.…

Minor traces of mount on reverse. Reads: 'Lord Henry Petty will be obliged to Mr Gray, if he can make it convenient to call in Downing Street to-morrow at 2 oClock. / September 29th. 1806.' Minuted by recipient on reverse: '29. Sept. 1806 / Lord Hy. Petty. / To be with His Ldp tomorrow. / 30th. went & recd. Instructions to work out the appointmt. of One Messenger to attend the Chancellor, whose allowce is to be 4s. P diem.'.…

Berkeley Square, 21 May 1827. Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne (1780 1863), statesman. In a ministerial career spanning nearly half a century he notably served as Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer and was three times Lord President of the Council.

2pp., 12mo. On leaf with mourning border. With 7.5 x 12.5 cm frank cut from front of envelope, reading 'Calne September fifth 1837 | Nassau Senior Esq | Ilfracombe | Devon | Lansdowne'. In good condition, lightly aged. While Senior is known to have been a protégé of the Marquess of Lansdowne, this letter suggests that he acted as his agent. The Marquess asks him to 'secure me a lodging at the hotel at Ilfracombe or if full at any house in the town on Friday, when I expect to be there pretty early'. In a postscript he adds that he will 'drive to the hotel', and that 'Henry has probably written to you that he has been advised to go to Leamington'.…

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. In good condition, on aged and lightly-worn paper, with a few minor rust stains. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to the Secretary of the Commission of the Peace. In the hand of a secretary, and signed by Lansdowne. Addressed by Lansdowne on reverse of second leaf 'Sec[retar]y. of Commission'. Docketed: 'Decber. 20th 1861 | Wilts | Ld. Lansdowne recd several | all but the 2 parsons'. He points out that he has regularly recommended 'Gentlemen to be added to the Magistracy', and adds that 'there has been no year when it is more necessary to strengthen the Bench, owing to deaths'. While he has 'ceased to reside in the County [of Wiltshire]' he gives a list of nine men who 'may be added to the Commission of the Peace', including the '2 Parsons' mentioned in the docketed note, 'Revd Francis Goddard, of Hillmarton' and 'The Revd. Robert Ashe, of Langley, Chippenham'. The last individual in the list is 'Charles Raikes of Netheravon House Esqre.'.…

Should Auckland's statement become 'the subject of enquiry' it will be deemed 'perfectly satisfactory', there being 'no question as to the right of appointing a deputy, altho' there might be aas to the reduction of his salary, which was the circumstance referred to me'. The subject is one which must 'necessarily come within the view of the Committee of Finance, whose observations upon every public department it is my anxious wish that we may be enabled to anticipate'. Petty was Chancellor of the Exchequer between 5 February 1806 to 26 March 1807, and was the first holder of that office to take up residence in Downing Street.…

This English politician, statesman and philanthropist served Parliament as a Whig and for more than half a century filled important posts such as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary and Lord President of the Council. ALS, 2pp (lettersheet), Bowood (Calne, Wiltshire, U.K.), n.d. Addressed to "Dear Bowles" (William Lisle Bowles, 1762-1850, poet, critic and clergyman). Near fine. Writing from the family estate of "Bowood," Lansdowne invites his friend to dinner on Monday, noting cryptically that "You will perhaps meet an acquaintance, not Rogers." Referring perhaps to an essay Bowles had published, Lansdowne also notes, "I quite assent to your criticism on light -- the lines were really not worth the thought you bestowed on them." Signed simply "Lansdowne" and neatly penned in brown ink. In a postscript Lansdowne adds, "I have some notion that Bingham is with you, if he is pray bring him to Bowood on Monday." Reverend Peregrine Bingham (1756-1826) was a well-known clergyman and also a poet and biographer -- as well as husband of Bowles' daughter. A nice example with great associations.…
