Paperback. Condition: New. 'There are children in Holbeck without crayons. Living in a city with an opera company. An opera company paid for with money from all of us. Until everyone has crayons no one gets opera. That's what I believe.'A deeply moving memoir of how a group of artists fed their local community during the Covid pandemic. When crisis hits, and audiences stay home, what's the most useful thing a theatre company can do? The answer was to become a food bank and one-stop-help-shop for those in need. In fifteen months, Slung Low would go on to deliver over 15,000 food parcels.

Paperback. Condition: New. Few cities have undergone such a radical transformation over the last few decades as Birmingham. Culturally and architecturally, it has been in a state of perpetual flux and regeneration, with new communities moving in, then out, and iconic post-war landmarks making way for brighter-coloured, 21st century flourishes. Much like the city itself, the characters in the stories gathered here are often living through moments of profound change, closing in on a personal or societal turning point, that carries as much threat as it does promise. Set against key moments of history - from Malcolm X's visit to Smethwick in 1965, to the Handsworth riots two decades later, from the demise of the city's manufacturing in the 70s and 80s, to the on-going tensions between communities in recent years - these stories celebrate the cultural dynamism that makes this complex, often divided 'second city' far more than just the sum of its parts.

Paperback. Condition: New. Wright, Paul; Rodríguez, Felipe; Gilliland, Alan (illustrator). After the American Civil War, the US Navy had been allowed to decay into complete insignificance. Yet, the commissioning of the modern Brazilian battleship Riachuelo and poor performance against the contemporary Spanish fleet, forced the US out of its isolationist posture towards battleships. The first true US battleships began with the experimental Maine and Texas, followed by the three-ship Indiana class, and the Iowa class, which incorporated lessons from the previous ships. These initial ships set the enduring US battleship standard of being heavily armed and armoured at the expense of speed. This fully illustrated study examines these first six US battleships, a story of political compromises, clean sheet designs, operational experience, and experimental improvements. These ships directly inspired the creation of an embryonic American military-industrial complex, enabled a permanent outward-looking shift in American foreign policy and laid the foundations of the modern US Navy.
