The vellum coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coat of arms is bumped to the edges and a little darkened with age. B + w illustrations from family portraits, with foxing to the tissue guards. Previous owner's bookplate to the flyleaf, otherwise internally clean. The history and letters of the Newdigate family from 1719 to 1806 - visits to Buxton and Manchester, sitting to Romney, a day at Naples with Nelson and Lady Hamilton, Sally Shilton's musical debut, visits to Portsmoth, Margate etc. One of the events at Arbury is said to be the origin of the story by George Eliot 'Mr Gilfil's Love Story' in 'Scenes of Clerical Life'.

Condition: Good. First edition (hardback). 8vo (22cm by 18cm), xii, 160pp. Frontispiece, 2 plates, folding genealogy. Original white cloth, gilt titling to the spine, elaborate gilt design to the front board, top edge gilt. The spine is a little darkened, the endpapers are foxed, the contents are very good; overall, this copy is in good to very good condition.
