The history and letters of the Newdigate family from 1719 to 1806 - visits to Buxton and Manchester, sitting to Romney, a day at Naples with Nelson and Lady Hamilton, Sally Shilton's musical debut, visits to Portsmoth, Margate etc. One of the events at Arbury is said to be the origin of the story by George Eliot 'Mr Gilfil's Love Story' in 'Scenes of Clerical Life'.
