Solomon Nunes Carvalho originally published his account of the perilous hardships he endured when he accompanied Colonel Fremont's fifth (and last) expedition across the mostly uncharted wilds of the far west, undertaken in 1853. Carvalho's book was published in 1857, in New York, by Derby and Jackson (the picture of the title page spread which we present with this listing shows the original title page, along with the 1954 title page). The full title as given on the original 1857 book is "Incidents of Travel and Adventure in the Far West; with col. Fremont's Last Expedition Across the Rocky Mountains: Including Three Months' Residence in Utah, and a Perilous trip Across the Great American Desert to the Pacific." This reprint, which is the Centenary Edition of 1953 - 1954 was published in Philadelphia by the Jewish Publication Society of America in "The Joseph R. Schiff Library of Jewish Contributions to American Democracy" series. The book was edited by Bertram Wallace Korn, who also wrote the Introduction. The book includes a brief biography of Solomon Nunes Carvalho (who lived a long and eventful life); there is also a collection of portraits and painting done by Carvalho, with discussions of the origins of the individual works. The book was previously owned, and has their inked signature on the front paste-down. SERIES : The Joseph R.
