Nowhere else in the ancient world do we find such an impressive and multifaceted interplay of architecture, decoration and the functions of space as we do in ancient Egypt, which is especially true for the cultic buildings of the Ptolemaic and Roman eras. This volume contains nineteen essays, each of which is concerned with different aspects related to ritual space, which were construed in texts and images, and were materialized in the stone spaces of ancient buildings. These studies cover such topics as the guidelines for the architecture of late temples, the careful planning that ensured specific decorative content be placed in exact spaces within the buildings, how space served as the background for the connectedness of the texts, the interrelationship between ritual practice and decoration of the cultic architecture, as well as case studies on the design principles of special spaces.
