Door hun nauwe banden met nun dominions en Kolonien over de hele wereld werden de Engelsen pioniers op het gebied van het intercontinentale luchtverkeer en - later- o.a. van het straalvliegtuig en het supersonische luchtverkeer. Hoe de Britse burgerluchtvaart in ruim een half jaar groeide tot een groot wereldomspannend netwerk wordt in dit boek beschreven. 80 p. many photos.

Er kwam zelfs in de jaren dertig een geregelde luchtverbinding tussen Engeland en Australie tot stand die grotendeels met vliegboten werd uitgevoerd en die ook tijdens de tweede wereldoortog onder dikwijls zeer moeilijke omstan-digheden is blijven functioneren. Na de ooriog, toen de echte lange-afstandvliegtuigen kwamen, is die lijn snel uitgegroeid tot een belangrijke luchtverbinding en nu is men met een Jumbo Jet in goed anderhalve dag aan het andere eind van de wereld. Dit boek verteil in woord en beeld hoe dat allemaal gegaan is in iets meer dan een naive eeuw tijd. 77 p. many photos.
