Two Vignettes within the text; from the frontispiece to Zion's Plea, written by Doctor Leighton, and one from Archbishop Sharp's tomb at St Andrews. Bibliographical footnotes to text. The story goes that in the time of King John, the then Baron of Kendal rewarded Richard de Gilpin, also known as 'Richard the Rider' for his bravery in killing the 'Wild Boar of Westmoreland' that had been terrorising local villages. He was rewarded with land in and around Kentmere (Lake District). From this time on the Gilpin's crest included a sable boar on a gold background.
