"The motives of those who established parochial libraries, both large and small, are sometimes tantalizingly obscure. The continuing education and improvement of the clergy is a recurring theme where information does exist, but it is also clear that, where conditions for lending survive, these collections were intended for a wider readership. Many of the books, as one would expect, are theological, but other subjects can be found. At Hatfield Broad Oak, for example, there are books on history, biography, medicine, philosophy and travel, and multilingual dictionaries. At Heathfield the collection includes books on classical scholarship, and works n agriculture, household management, carriers' timetables, heraldry and English literature. These were - and are - 'accessible' collections and we can only speculate today on their original use and influence." - from the foreword. Fine.
