Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. An association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Karl, with thanks for many of the ideas expressed in this book, Victor B. Scheffer." Uncommon signed. The recipient is Karl W. Kenyon, who was a pinniped biologist and Scheffer's close colleague, working under him in the Fish and Wildlife Service in Seattle. Kenyon undertook a census of fur seals in Alaska (Scheffer and Kenyon were co-authors on this paper among others), pioneered handling techniques for sea otters which allowed them to be relocated to areas they'd been extirpated, and later became an expert on Hawaiian monk seals. In many other ways he was dedicated to marine mammals. He also was one of the first to document the problem of plastic ingestion in sea birds. This is Victor Scheffer's first book, a systematic review of pinnipeds and their populations across the globe. Hewas a marine mammalogist who worked for thirty years for government agencies, including the National Park Service, Forest Service, and Fish and Wildlife Service, before he moved to academia at the University of Washington in 1969 and devoted himself to popular writing. Extensive literature cited. With some notes/edits in pencil in Kenyon's hand in the brief introduction, revising population estimates, etc. Also tipped in is a letter and a copy of a letter to Scheffer, both dated 1958, the first from Ronald A Ryder, the copy from William Troyer. Both have to do with some details about a walrus specimen. The copy has "Kenyon" written at top. A near fine book with some minor rubbing to spine ends, darkening to upper face of the text block. In a very good jacket with some slight loss to spine ends and corners. Letters about fine. An important association copy in the field of marine mammalogy .
