Hardback. Condition: Good. The War That Saved My Life meets Coraline in this deliciously creepy (Publishers Weekly, starred review) middle grade historical novel following an anxious young girl learning to face her fears--and her ghosts--against the backdrop of the typhoid epidemic. Essie O'Neill is afraid of everything. She's afraid of cats and electric lights. She's afraid of the silver sick bell, a family heirloom that brings up frightening memories. Most of all, she's afraid of the red door in her nightmares. But soon Essie discovers so much more to fear. Her mother has remarried, and they must move from their dilapidated tenement in the Bronx to North Brother Island, a dreary place in the East River. That's where Essie's new stepfather runs a quarantine hospital for the incurable sick, including the infamous Typhoid Mary. Essie knows the island is plagued with tragedy. Years ago, she watched in horror as the ship General Slocum caught fire and sank near its shores, plummeting one thousand women and children to their deaths. Now, something on the island is haunting Essie. And the red door from her dreams has become a reality, just down the hall from her bedroom in her terrifying new house. Convinced her stepfather is up to no good, Essie investigates. Yet to uncover the truth, she will have to face her own painful history--and what lies behind the red door.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. In this thought-provoking address given to the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Walter Kasper, whom Pope Francis has called a superb theologian, discusses everything that is beautiful about the family without avoiding its problems. According to Cardinal Kasper, the family functions as a small domestic church that can be a privileged route to evangelization. He speaks of this domestic church in a broad sense that includes the nuclear family as well as communities, parish groups, and other organizations. Cardinal Kasper considers the rediscovery of the gospel of the family, the family's place in the order of creation, and the vision of the family in the Book of Genesis and in God's plan. The cardinal then reflects on the structures of sin within the family, including family problems, tensions between men and women, and the suffering of women and mothers. Finally, he concludes with a discussion of the family in the Christian order of redemption, drawing from the gospels and other New Testament texts about the family, such as St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians. He discusses marriage as a sacrament and its sanctifying grace. The cardinal also mentions the issue of those who have remarried after divorce. He stresses the need to unite pastoral care, the words of Jesus, and an understanding of divine mercy in responding to these Catholics. Yesterday, before falling asleep, though not to fall asleep, I read, or re-read, Cardinal Kasper's remarks. I would like to thank him, because I found a deep theology, and serene thoughts in theology. It is nice to read serene theology. It did me well and I had an idea, and excuse me if I embarrass Your Eminence, but the idea is this: this is called doing theology while kneeling. Thank you. Thank you. -- Pope Francis.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Parents - Would you want your child to survive one million miles of accident-free driving, like the author? If so - have them read, and quiz them on, the concepts taught in this book. A common-sense driving book for teenagers, which recognizes and addresses the difference between the teen brain and that of an adult.Parents, investing in this book for your teen will teach them how to survive while learning to drive rather than becoming another teenage statistic. It won't teach them how to parallel park, make a three-point turn or how to pass a written test. They can easily learn these skills elsewhere. This book will provide the tools for your teen to recognize and avoid hazardous situations and unsafe drivers. It will show them how to train their inexperienced, teenage brains to make safe, split-second decisions when life-threatening events occur. In this book I have shared the knowledge gained over many years of driving, to help keep your teen alive while driving. Now help them to understand and apply this knowledge. Don't just give them this book. Make sure they read it. Quiz them on it, especially the chapter on Defensive Driving.Reviews by Law Enforcement ProfessionalsInvestigating traffic accidents - especially those resulting in death or serious physical injury - is one of the most difficult jobs facing a police officer. When those accidents involve young or inexperienced drivers, the task is especially agonizing. With an emphasis upon driver safety, this very comprehensive book is an excellent resource for teenagers and parents alike, and I highly recommend it Daniel Carlson - Captain, Assistant Director of Training, New York State Police, Ret.Rich, thanks for letting me review your book. It's obvious you put a lot of effort into it, drawing on your unique experiences. I especially liked your personal stories and all of your common sense, practical advice You have provided an informative life-saving guide for everyone hoping to avoid a motor vehicle accident. I am confident you will make better, more thoughtful drivers with your insights. Each of my own grandchildren will be receiving a copy of this book as they prepare to get behind the wheel and hit the road. Hardback. Condition: Good. A fresh take on weeknight cooking from The Splendid Table's Lynne Rossetto Kasper and Sally Swift As loyal listeners know, Lynne and Sally share an unrelenting curiosity about everything to do with food. Their show, The Splendid Table, looks at the role food plays in our lives--inspiring us, making us laugh, nourishing us, and opening us up to the world around us. Now they have compiled all the most trenchant tips, never-fail recipes, and everyday culinary know-how from the program in How to Eat Supper, a kitchen companion unlike any other. This is no mere cookbook. Like the show, this book goes far beyond the recipe, introducing the people and stories that are shaping America's changing sense of food. We don' t eat, shop, or cook as we used to. Our relationship with food has intensified, become more controversial, richer, more pleasurable, and sometimes more puzzling. How to Eat Supper gives voice to rarely heard perspectives on food--from the quirky to the political, from the grassroots to the scholarly, from the highbrow to the humble--and shows the essential role breaking bread together plays in our world. How to Eat Supper takes you through a plethora of inviting recipes simple enough to ensure success even if you've never cooked before. And if you are experienced in the kitchen, you' ll find challenging new concepts and dishes to spark your imagination.…
